Linear Inequalities

The math lab class I teach is for resource students who haven’t passed the Algebra ECA. I was recently reviewing graphing linear inequalities with the students. Using an HTML 5 web page (Online Graphing Calculator), the students were able to manipulate given inequalities on the Ipad. Because they were not going through the labor of graphing each inequality, they were able to dig deeper and truly understand what a linear inequality means. They completed a four-question quiz on Moodle requiring them to explain why a set of coordinates was or was not a solution. One student who really dislikes math said, “Why wasn’t I taught this way before? I understand now.” And she did understand, as evidenced by her perfect on the quiz. Click on the picture below to see the student’s response to one of the quiz questions.
